Restaurants
If you want to dine out (eating not at home), you can choose a traditional restaurant or a fast food restaurant. There are first, second and third class restaurants - of course, the first class ones are the most expensive, though nowadays to eat in any kind of restaurants is expensive.
Traditional restaurants are more expensive than fast food restaurants, sometimes we even have to book a table in advance if the place is popular, but the dishes are healthier and the atmosphere is more relaxed and more elegant than in a fast food restaurant.
In a traditional restaurant we enter and the waiter or waitress comes to greet us, then he or she shows our table. We sit down, read the menu and we can choose from a lot of different soup, first and second courses, and desserts. We can drink different kinds of beer, wine or soft drinks. The variety of dishes and drinks is huge. There are smoking and non-smoking areas in a restaurant.
When we decided what to eat and drink, the waiter/waitress comes and writes the order down. We have to wait a little till the meal is prepared, but it never takes more than 15-20 minutes till our lunch/dinner is ready. After we have eaten and drunk enough, we pay the bill and we leave a little tip for the waiter/waitress.
In a fast food restaurant we enter and walk to the counter. There are no waiters or waitresses - the people work behind the counters. We quickly read the menu, placed on the wall and we quickly choose what we want to eat and drink.
The variety of dishes and drinks is small. At McDonalds, for example, we can have hamburgers, chips, some dessert like icecream, some pies or doughnuts, and we can drink Coke, mineral water or some sparkling soft drinks like Sprite or energy drinks. In a fast food restaurant we mustn't smoke.
We quickly get our chosen meal and drinks, (it takes only a few minutes as most of the dishes are pre-prepared so they are ready-made or they have to be warmed up only), everything is put on a tray, then we pay and we have to leave and find a free table when we can eat.
I prefer traditional restaurants (especially Italian restaurants) but I don't eat there very often because the prices are too high for me. Sometimes I like eating in a fast food restaurant (like McDonalds) because I love cheeseburgers - even though they are not healthy at all.

Food and meals
There are three main meals in a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Children can have elevenses at school which means that they can eat their sandwiches or some biscuits, a croissant or some sweets between nine and ten o'clock in the elevenses break.
People have breakfast in the morning mainly at home. We have a bowl of muesli or cornflakes, a sandwich with cold cuts, a slice of bread with honey, jam or marmalade, frankfurters with mustard, scrambled eggs, fried eggs or hard-boiled eggs with a slice of bread, a roll or a croissant, and we drink a cup of coffee or tea, or a mug of milk, cocoa or capucchino. Some people don't have breakfast which is unhealthy because our body needs food to work properly during the day.
People have lunch between noon and two o'clock, at home, in a restaurant or in the canteen of their school or workplace. First we eat some kind of soup (meat soup, fruit soup, tomato soup, goulash, fish soup, egg soup or potato soup), then we have a second course. A second course can be fried cheese/chicken/fish with mashed potatoes, rice or chips, some vegetable dish, made from green peas, beans, vegetable marrow or sorrel, or some kinds of pasta (pasta with poppy seed, cottage cheese or cabbage). At the end of the lunch we can have a slice of cake, pancakes or an apple or peach for dessert.
People have dinner between five or seven o'clock in the evening, mainly at home. We have a bowl of muesli or cornflakes, a sandwich with cold cuts, a slice of bread with honey, jam or marmalade, frankfurters with mustard, scrambled eggs, fried eggs or hard-boiled eggs with a slice of bread, a roll or a croissant,, and we drink a cup of coffee or tea, or a mug of milk, cocoa or capucchino.
I can cook only simple dishes, like tomato soup or egg soup, and I can make pancakes, but my mother can cook and bake very well.
My favourite dishes are stuffed caggabe, fruit soup, pizza, any kinds of pasta and pancakes with cottage cheese. My favourite drink is capucchino and peach or plum ice tea. I simply love Italian and Greek dishes, and I like fast food as well, even though they are unhealthy.

Healthy way of life
A healthy way of life means that we live our lives in a healthy way, without destroying our heart and body.
1. We have to consume healthy food and drink only.
We shouldn't eat:
- sugar
- sweets like bonbons, chocolate or ice-cream
- fatty meat
- dairy products with high fat content
- white bread
- pasta
- fast food (hamburgers or deep frozen pizzas)
We shouldn't drink
- alcohol
- Coke or coffee
We should eat:
- any kinds of fruit
- any kinds of vegetables
- fish
- low-fat dairy products
- brown or rye bread
We should drink:
- mineral water
- green tea
- fresh made fruit juice
2. We shouldn't smoke - because smoking destroys the lungs and it can cause cancer, not only for the smoker but for anyone who breathes in the smoke around us.
3. We shouldn't take drugs. Drugs are addictive, it ruins our health, it makes us want more and more until we spend all our money on it and neglect our family, friends and work, and drug overdose or polluted drugs can cause death.
4. We should take more exercise and sports, we should do more trips into the nature. Everyone should take some sports regularly, like playing football or basketball twice a week or we can just simply go jogging or walk one or two kilometres every morning or evening. We should walk or cycle to work/school instead of using our cars or any means of public transport.

Home
People can live in a house or in a flat.
In big cities we can find more housing estates and huge blocks of flats, but in small towns and in villages people usually live in houses with a garden.
I live in Encs in a house.
Town/Village life can be boring for some people but I like it.
There are so many advantages of living here. The people are friendly, the air is clean, there are no traffic jams, crowds or air pollution here and we have more privacy. We are close to the nature, we can go on a trip anytime. There are some disadvantages as well. Living in a house is expensive, we have to commute to work or to school, which means we have to get up earlier than the people in the city. There are less shops here, and no theatres or cinemas.
I live in Miskolc in a block of flats.
City life is always interesting and never boring, as there are so many places here where people can have fun or get entertained: museums, exhibitions, restaurants, pubs, cafés, cinemas and theatres. There is a variety of schools and places of work, there are a lot of shops and department stores here, though there are disadvantages as well. At rush hours there are traffic jams on the roads and streets, the air pollution is huge, there are crowds and big noise everywhere.
I live in a flat with my parents on the third floor.
In our flat there are seven rooms, a hall, a living-room, a bedroom for me, a kitchen, a bathroom, a toilet, and a lumber room. We also have a balcony where we can sit and grow plants.
On the windows there are white curtains, on the floor there is linoleum or parquet. In some flats there is a wall-to-wall carpet on the floor.
In my room there is a bed, a writing table, and a large wall unit with a lot of shelves and a built-in wardrobe (I keep my clothes there). On the shelves I keep my books, my CDs, my DVDs, a few statuettes and souvenirs. My computer is on the writing desk in front of the window (my notebook is in its own bag on a shelf). The TV and the DVD-player are in the corner, beside the wall unit. The wallpaper is white in my room, and there are a few posters on the wall. I have three potted plants in my room because I love plants. (The vacuum cleaner is in the corner behind the door.)
In the bathroom I can find the washing machine, a big tub and a washbasin, with a mirror above it. We keep the shampoo, the conditioner, the body lotion and face creams on a shelf above the washing machine. The toothbrushes and toothpaste are in a mug on the washbasin.
In the kitchen I can find a table and four chairs by the window. There are two big built-in cupboards where my mother keeps cutlery (spoons, knives and forks), plates, bowls, and also fruit and vegetables, pasta, biscuits, and other kinds of foodstuffs that don't need cooling). We have a few household appliances: a dishwasher, a sink, a fridge with a deep freezer, a cooker with an oven, and a microwave oven.

Services
In my town I can find a lot of services: there are a lot of shops and department stores where I can buy everything I want to, from food and drink to household gadgets and furniture or toys; there are also post offices, photographer's, taylor shops, shoemakers' and barbers' shops, dry cleaner's, watchmakers', repair shops for radios, TV sets, DVD players and all household appliences.
At the photographer's I can have my photos taken when I need a photo for my new identity card or my passport, and if it is urgent, they will do it in an hour. They also develop and print photos which have been taken by me or other amateur photographers.
I go to a taylor shop or a dressmaker when I want to have a new dress or suit made for myself, but I cannot find anything pretty for my taste, or when I have a piece of clothes that is too tight or too baggy for me and it needs to be let out or taken in.
The shoemaker does the shoe heels or soles, patches or sews the upper leather of your shoes if they need repairing.
Men go to the barber and women go to the hairdresser when they want a new hairstyle - when they want to have their hair cut, dyed into another colour. At the barber's men's moustaches and beards can be trimmed as well.
I go to the dry cleaner's if I want to have any stains removed or if I want any of my clothes dyed from one colour to another.
The watchmaker repairs or sets your watch, if it is slow or fast, and he also changes the battery if it is run down.
At the repair shops the engineers can repair any kinds of household gadgets or any electrical appliances, from vacuum cleaners and TV sets to radios and DVD players.
At the post office I can do a lot of things.
- I can post letters, postcards, parcels and packages,
- I can buy stamps, letter writing papers, envelopes, postcards, magazines and newspapers,
- I can pay my rent and my bills for gas, electricity, telephones or other services,
- I can send money by money order or cheque,
- I can recharge my mobile phone when all the credits have run out
- I can make a phone call
If I want to post a letter or postcard, you have to address it properly. A letter can be registered or sent by recorded delivery which means that the person who receives it must sign for it. If a letter is urgent, you send it express and pay an extra fee for the postage.
If I want to post a parcel, first it has to be weighed at the parcel balance and I have to fill in a parcel form. Parcels and packets can be sent by parcel post or by letter post (if they are not too big). Letter post is quicker.

Travelling
There are different means of transport if you want to travel abroad:
- car
- bus
- train
- ship
- plane
The most popular and the most used means of transport are trains and planes.
There are different kinds of trains: slow train, passenger trains, fast trains and Intercity trains. Intercity trains are the fastest because they stop at less stations but they are more expensive because we have to pay an extra fee for the seat.
Slow trains and passenger trains have more stops and sometimes they need double the time to reach their destination. For exaple it takes less than two hours to get from Miskolc to Budapest by Intercity, but it takes three or four hours to take the same amount of distance by a slow train or passenger train.
You can buy your tickets at the railway stations, the MÁV offices and at the travel agencies. It can be a single ticket or a return ticket. A return ticket is worth more because you don't have to worry about your journey back and it costs less than a single ticket. When you want to get home from Budapest, and you forgot to buy your ticket home in advance, there are always long queues at the cash desks at the railway stations.
I like travelling by train and I always travel by Intercity. It is expensive, but it is very fast and clean, and it is more comfortable than passenger trains.
Travelling by plane is the most expensive, but this is the most comfortable and the fastest means of transport. Some people say it is the most dangerous way of travelling, while others say that there are more accidents happening on the roads. I have never flown and to be honest, I am afraid of flying.
You can buy your plane ticket at the travel agencies or MALÉV agencies, or by using the internet and ordering your ticket at a foreign airlines.
If you want to travel along a river or between the two shores of a lake or between the two coasts of a sea, you can travel by ships or by ferries (these also carry cars and bicycles).

Public transport
There are a lot of means of transport inside a city if you don't want to walk or use your car or your bicycle.
We can travel by:
- tram
- bus
- trolley bus (only in Budapest)
- underground (only in Budapest)
- taxi
There are other means of transport if we can travel outside the city:
- coach (it is a kind of bus that runs between cities, towns or villages)
- train (slow train, passenger train, fast train or Intercity)
- ship / boat
The tram is the slowest means of transport, it runs in the inner part of cities. It pollutes the environment the least because it uses electricity - and not petrol.
Buses and trolley buses are faster (and less environment-friendly as they use petrol), but the underground is the fastest because it runs under the ground so it doesn't have to fight with the huge amounts of cars and the traffic jam. The underground is like a kind of train and it uses electricity.
Taxis are the most expensive means of transport inside the city. We can call a taxi by telephone or we can find some cars at the taxi stations. Most people use taxis only when they are in a hurry.
We can get on and get off the vehicle at tram or bus stops, and at underground stations.
If you want to travel by any means of transport, you need a ticket or a season ticket. A ticket can be used only for one journey, while the season ticket can be used for a whole month.
Tickets must be handled as soon as you get on a vehicle - otherwise you can be punished (you have to pay a fine, a lot of money if you are caught by a ticket controller).
Tickets can be bought on the vehicle (thought it is more expensive than when you buy it at other places), or in small shops, at post offices, at newsagent's and at termini of trams and buses. Tickets for the underground can be bought only at the termini - and not on the vehicle itself.
Tickets for trains can be bought at the railway stations or in MÁV offices only.

At the doctor
When I feel very ill, I go to the doctor.
First I call for an appointment, then I go to the consulting room and I wait for my turn to enter. Then the doctor listens to my complaints: how I am feeling, where I feel pain - and she examines me. I have to strip to the waits, then she looks at my throat, listens to my heart and my lungs, and sometimes she feels my pulse and checks my blood pressure.
When she knows what disease I have got, she makes out a prescription (with the prescription, I can buy the necessary medicine, pills or liquid) and if I am very weak or if I have a serious disease, she can put me on the sick list for a few days. This means that I am not allowed to go to school or work during that period.
Then I have to stay in bed, relax and sleep a lot, take the medicine two or three times a day, before or after meals, and I have to drink a lot of hot tea, fruit juice or mineral water.
The symptoms of a disease are:
- a running nose
- a sore throat
- a bad cough
- splitting headache
- high temperature
- insomnia (when I cannot sleep at nights)
- pain in my limbs (arms or legs)
If I have a toothache, I have to go to the dentist. I have to sit into the dentist's chair and she examines my teeth. If it is needed, she drills the bad tooth, then fills it. If a tooth cannot be saved, it must be pulled out. In this case I am given an injection into my gum so my pain will be less.
If I have a serious disease (tonsil-removal, a broken limb or appendicitis) when I need an operation, I must go or be taken to the hospital. After the operation I have to stay in the hospital until the doctor says that I am healthy again and that I can leave.
The are curable and incurable diseases.
The curable diseases are sore throat, influenza, chicken pox, mumps or measles.
The incurable diseases are cancer, AIDS and heart attack.
There are different kinds of handicaps that cannot be healed or only in a small amount. These are:
- blind - when someone cannot see
- deaf - when someone cannot hear
- dumb - when someone cannot speak
- lame . when someone cannot move

The incurable diseases are cancer, AIDS and heart attack.
There are different kinds of handicaps that cannot be healed or only in a small amount. These are:
- blind - when someone cannot see
- deaf - when someone cannot hear
- dumb - when someone cannot speak
- lame . when someone cannot move
Shopping
I like both window-shopping and shopping.
If I want to buy food and drink, I go to the supermarket.
I can buy
- bakery products (bread, rolls, croissants or buns),
- dairy products (milk, yoghurt, cheese, butter, cottage cheese or sour cream),
- meat (chicken, beef, pork or lamb),
- fruit (apples, pears, cherries, plums, lemons, peaches or pineapples)
- vegetable (peppers, tomatoes, potatoes or lettuces)
- drinks like Coke, tea, coffee, cocoa, capucchino or mineral water
- and a lot of other things like eggs, sugar, salt, oil, pasta, flour, rice, muesli, crisps or chocolate.
In supermarkets I can also buy shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilet paper, serviette, cat food, different kinds of detergent or washing powder.
The products are arranged on shelves and if I want some of them, I simply put them into my basket or trolley. When I have bought everything I wanted, I go to the cash desk and I pay for the things in cash or by credit card.
The prices can be cheaper or more expensive, it depends on which branch we are buying.
At the weekends there are huge crowds in the supermarkets when everyone goes to do the shopping for the next week.
I can buy different kinds of fruit and vegetables, eggs and flowers in the market, but sometimes the prices are higher in the markets than in the supermarkets.
If I want to buy clothes, I go to the Plaza. There I can find a lot of shops, most of them are expensive, but the clothes are prettier and more fashionable than those in the shops on the main street. My favourite shops are Promod and Shoe Manic.
In the department stores I can buy not only food and drink, and clothes for children, women and men, but furniture (chairs, tables, writing desks, beds or sofas) and electrical appliances (washing machine, iron, vacuum cleaners, TV sets, CD players or DVD players) as well. But nowadays there are special shops like Media Markt for electrical appliances, CDs and DVDs, or Intersport for sportswear and sports equipment like footballs, basketballs or a pair of skis.
